Through fossil findings, the best-known dinosaur, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, has already been well researched. How many of these animals lived in the world remained unanswered, until now.
According to the science magazine “scinexx,” researchers used a formula developed by U.S. ecologist John Damuth to calculate the population density of animals living today.
This puts the population density of an animal species in relation to its bodyweight, its position in the food chain, and its body stature – facts that have already been adequately answered in the case of the well-known T-Rex.
Assuming that the Tyrannosaurus Rex existed for about 2.4 million years, there should have been a total of about 2.5 billion specimens in the world, according to the research team. However, this is only an evaluation, the research team emphasized. By way of comparison, a total of 110 billion modern humans have lived on Earth to date.
